Medical marijuana sales do not pay excise taxes

A couple of the recreational marijuana dispensaries in town offer low-cost medical marijuana cards. I’ve never really understood why it’s important to get a medical marijuana card. My friends and I live in a state where recreational marijuana is legal. As long as you are 21 years of age, you can legally buy marijuana from many dispensaries in the state. When I was waiting in line for my marijuana order last week, I overheard a conversation between one of the budtenders and a new customer. The budtender was explaining the benefit of getting a medical marijuana card. The budtender started talking about the amount of sales tax that the person would save and I started listening much more carefully. When I got to the counter, I asked the salesperson if she could explain more information to me about a medical marijuana card. The budtender asked me to wait a couple of minutes and she sent someone out to the lobby to speak with me. I found out that medical marijuana patients don’t have to pay any of the excise taxes. These are quite a large amount of money and they add up really quickly. When I found out that I would save more than $40 on my current order, I decided to get the card. It was only $25 and I also received a discount on my order since it was my first time using the dispensary as a medical patient. My mom always told me never to eavesdrop on someone else’s conversation, but it worked in my favor this time.
